Aquatica is now a horrible company!

I have recently contacted Aquatica about the button issues and my concerns about the housing. They asked me to send a photo so they could see the obstructions. Now I'm no mechanic nor a housing builder, but I'm pretty sure I could see if there was something in the way. I comply and send the picture anyways.

The next day I get a reply from the repair guy saying the repair guy is not in the office and he'll look at the pictures on Monday. So this kind of pisses me off! The only guy I've ever talked to at aquatica is this guy. It's not like I can pick up a loaner housing while this guy is farting around enjoying his weekend. I've now dropped thousands of dollars and can't even get any assistance.

Today is monday and first thing this guy emails me and asks for some background about the housing. Are you kidding me. You just built this thing a F%&*ing week ago and now you need info about it. I want to reply in a smart ass way, but hold my tongue trying to get some kind of service out of these idiots. He also asks for the name of my dealer so that when he does figure something out they can take care of it right away. Well, this would mean me driving in the awesome weather (joking) at my expense to go show this to someone else that's just going to tell them the same thing as me. Oh yeah, I've already talked to him and he didn't have any idea what could cause this. Now I reply "how about you contact me when you have a solution and this way I want have to involve a middleman"

Now I would like  to take a quick second and say my dealer who I don't really know is a great guy so far. We don't have any relationship. He didn't sell me anything at all. I contacted him with the part numbers I required and he placed the order. That's as far as it went. I don't feel in anyway that he is responsible or liable for anything that happens to this housing. Nor should he have to deal with the headache that aquatica is completely responsible for.

Where was I... oh the response. He tells me "OK, then, I suggest you contact your dealer and have them see what they can do with this and if they need to, they will contact us." So I've responded " So, You're not going to help me?" I haven't gotten a response, but I find this pretty lousy. Am I not a real person? What can my dealer do that I can't? Is there some special reason why they won't talk to me? I have a problem and I went to the source. The dealer was only a means to get this housing. He is only a seller. He simply placed an order for me, because once again aquatica doesn't want to talk to a customer.

My frustration is at an all time high right now. I don't know what to do. If aquatica can fix this they refuse to help me do it. They will only deal with the dealer. Is this some kind of legal thing I don't know about? Why if you have the solution do you want to make it even harder for me to fix it? Maybe I'm just angry, but this doesn't seem like the way to do things. This is not customer service at all. So much for backing your product. Please, if I've ever told you aquatic was the housing to get, forget what I said and find someone else. This company is horrible and should not be allowed to scheme in America anymore. Or any respectable country for that matter.

ahhh!!!

ok, better. But still no housing

Little edit goes a long way

Aquatica still fails

So recently I had a troubled dive and nothing seemed to work. I thought it was me and in a way it was for not dry firing everything before I got in the water. Well yesterday I took the extra effort and test fired everything. The strobes fired and the set button actually recorded for a few seconds. Maybe this is what I should have done before every dive...

As the time approaches Into the water I go. On the descent I position the strobes and fire a couple test shots. Still working! I push the live view button next which has had trouble before and it turns on instantly! I push the set button to record... Nothing! Again!

I would like to mention that I don't normally like to talk about what I paid for something, but here I would just like to mention that this housing costs more than my Jeep. I only bring this up to verbalize why I'm so frustrated. This was supposed to be "The" purchase. Everyone said "you get what you pay for" when I had a crappy Ikelite housing (which was still two grand). So I bought the top of the line. The Aston Martin of camera housings. You can't find one with a better reputation or higher price for my camera. Now, I haven't had full function since day one. As much as I want to fix this myself I don't want to void the warranty by tinkering with it.

I get a nagging feeling that this company might have gotten to big for its britches. I hope they don't expand to much and start putting out sub-par products. This might be the single most frustrating thing I have ever purchased. My response to everyone that said "you get what you pay" for is F%*$ you!

Now this just might be me, but I want to think people should take pride in their work. Whether you hate your job or started your own company. It's your job and there should be no reason not to do it the best you can. If it takes you longer because your not good at it, well take the extra time and produce a quality product or service.

As for aquatica they did take the extra time. It took them twice as long as they promised. Which would have been okay if that time was required to put out the perfect product. The waiting itself was frustrating, but not nearly as much as waiting and then getting a defective product. I have a strong feeling this will need to be sent back.

That bring up another world of problems in itself. By the time these guys stop dragging their feet summer will be over as well as the dive season. I can't afford to send something this big to another country after what I had to pay for it. Not to mention the biggest reason I started diving again was this housing and now I can't even get the enjoyment I was expecting out of it.

Well... Here are some pics from yesterday. At least the photo part is working. If only the video (the reason I bought this rig) was working as well.

Aquatica 5D Mark ii 2nd wreck dive

Today I went and dove on the Duane in Key Largo.  I charge all my batteries and lubed all the o-rings got all the tanks filled. I take a nice ride out with Horizon Divers and plan to do one long dive on the Duane. We plan on penetrating to the engine room and hopefully I get to finally do a little video. As I make the descent I position my strobes and lights to a general location. I fire off a couple of shots to get the settings for today. I think to myself that these strobes don't seem to be putting out much power today.
I stick my hand in front of them and test fire another shot. Nothing! I'm an idiot. I must not have connected the hot shoe cable. I decide I have enough light to shoot stills and video inside the wreck and press on.
As the reel man ties his line I try the video button again and once again I get nothing. To make matters worse the button to change back from live view isn't responding at all. Great! now I'm stuck in live view which limits a lot of the cameras ability for stills. Well I manage to get it out of live view by trying a bunch of different buttons.
I complete the dive and manage to get a couple of nice shots from the Duane. I do have to say my frustration with this housing are building.
When I get home I dry my housing and check the camera and I am surprised to find that my hot shoe cable is connected. I disconnect and reconnect and fire a couple dry shots and the strobes work. So now I have a new complaint for the top of the line housing I have purchased. The video button still doesn't work. nothing new there. now I realized the hot shoe cable is a super sensitive little guy and doesn't work when he doesn't want to. Pretty Lame!
To put a little icing on the cake Aquatica asked me to "like" their Facebook page. Like I would after this housing. I did leave a comment on their page stating my problem and asked how I should fix it. They responded by saying it's inappropriate to mention their problems on Facebook and I should email them directly. I guess it's inappropriate to let others know Aquatica isn't that good of a company and their products have major defects. Who knew?
I know I seem to write a lot of negatives about this housing, and I feel justified after what I paid to expect it to work, but I still like it and it's the best housing I've used so far.
Here are the shots from today...

Aquatica 5D Mark ii day 2 - Macro Port

Ok last time I took this out without really looking at what was where. This time I attached the macro port and did a dry test run of each button and knob. Everything worked great and have full functions of each button.
This time with the macro port it was neutral maybe slightly negatively buoyant. Which I prefer. Also it's evenly distributed which makes a world of difference to me. I tested everything underwater and everything worked except the set button (again). Well this button is only important if you want to do video (or use most features on your camera) so this was a bit of a drag. It seems to work fine above water, but not below. Other than that I had full function which is good because I only shoot in manual underwater.
I spent a few hours in a canal underneath a boat in about 10ft of murky brown water. I really ran this through the paces changing buttons quickly and often depending on the shot I was trying. Now that I have a better feel for which knob does what I was able to change settings pretty quickly.
I'm starting to like this more and more. I don't have any new negatives from last time except the set button. I've only got positives so that makes me feel better about not buying a house instead of this rig. ha. I do like the macro port better than the dome, but I'm trying it again tomorrow on the Spiegel Grove again. So hopefully it will do as I want it to.
Here are a couple of pictures from the 100mm macro test run

A couple quick shots

Aquatica 5D Mark ii

So my housing finally arrived. Other than a giant canadian stamp on the back I was extremely impressed with this housing. Want to first say thanks to Tom Stack in the Florida Keys for getting this for me. Extremely helpful and very friendly.

On to the housing. First impression is it's very well made. It has a wonderful solid feel to it. I like the textured outside, but it can be a little abrasive so be careful what rubs against it. All of the buttons are firm, but comfortable to reach. The knobs are large enough to turn even with gloves on. They rotate smoothly. How ever on my first attempt underwater it did feel like they were slipping a bit.

I will be the first to admit I didn't read the manuals all the way through. I assembled as directed, water tested, installed camera and water tested again. It was late and I was diving in the morning. I did not take the time to become familiar with the controls on the housing.

So my first underwater test was to 110' in strong current while planning a technical penetration. I know, not the ideal learning location. Used a housing before how much different can they be? boy was I wrong. I had trouble figuring out which knob went to which control. I didn't even see the knob to control the upper wheel by the shutter release. Had a hard time changing shutter speeds without that.. So I had a bit of a struggle with that, but that's not Aquatica's fault. Entirely mine and I'm okay with it. I did manage to get lucky on some shots, but that's not how I operate and don't count them.

I spent the following morning reading about the controls and installed the macro port and the 100mm lens. I like the look and feel of the macro port better than the dome. The dome makes the housing positively buoyant in front and I don't like that. Also, the housing has to be placed front down to extract/install camera. I don't like the design of this. I did install the shade, but Aquatica doesn't include a cover for the dome shade. I really wish they would add the $50 into the price or at the very least mention you can't cover the front anymore with shade attached. I figure for the thousands of dollars you will spend on the housing, dome, shade, port extensions, macro ports it's not to much to ask for the proper covers to be included in the cost.

Next couple of features. First, being something I find absolutely ridiculous. The underwater microphone. The only thing to hear underwater is bubbles. Do you really need to amplify something that is going to get edited out after the dive. (side note - the bubbles sound in underwater video is horrible and should almost always be removed). This feature probably cost and extra thousand bucks and is not an option to remove. Big waste in my opinion.

The second feature, again one I find pointless. Is the moisture alarm. While the thought was nice there isn't a lot you can do about it once it's going off. Am I supposed to shoot my camera to the surface from 300'? Don't think so. Is a loud beeping and flashing red light going to help me focus hundreds of feet inside of a wreck? or cause me to lose focus of the dive while I watch my camera drown? I see how this could be useful the first time you test your camera if you're blind. After you enter a body of water you cannot make the rapid ascent to save your camera and I feel this feature is going to cause a well funded novice diver serious injury. Also, a feature that probably cost thousands and shouldn't be in there. Once again, wish it was an optional accessory.

Last complaint before the positives. is the focus light mount on top of the housing in the center. I wish it was located in front of the sync connectors. The cords or y-cord come up directly in front of the light causing shadows and/or tension. It seems logical to me that this should the other way around. You know to mount something behind a light instead of in front restricting the light... maybe that's just me.

Now on to the positives. As I stated before this is very well made. Everything fits well together and there is not any question on the housing if something is sealed properly. However and be warned the port extensions have a lock the ports do not and however unlikely it is possible for the to come off. The pieces all fit together nicely and being all metal feel extremely durable and protecting. I like this piece of mind! Installing the camera with certain lenses can be a bit of a pain, but with the incredible size variations of lenses this can not be helped. For the most part it is very well thought out. I did find the focus/zoom gears a little disappointing. For the cost of these I would like them to fit together without me having to cut an o-ring into different pieces. It they expect them to fit multiple lenses they should have thought of something a little more professional than mix and matching little pieces of o-ring.

On the bottom of the housing are several attachment hole for mounting various plates, tripods or what have you. Very nice to be flexible about this. I will be trying a tripod as soon as the current dies down here. I have seen large canister lights mounted on the bottom and cave lights mounted to the arms. Bet the dome won't float up with that rig. Jealous!

The arms that come with this I could swear they used my hands as the model. They fit so comfortable I cannot describe them. Might be weird that's my favorite part of the housing so far. Not sure if they fit everyone else's the same way, but I love them.

On the top of the handles things get a bit janky for me. I really don't like having open screw holes. Since I bought arms to go with this two of the four holes are covered. Now though two are always exposed and I will have to go out of my way to clean and dry these or find a suitable plug to keep these from corroding. This is important if you ever want to change your configuration and need these holes. If you have ever tried to get water out of a screw hole you know have much a pain in the butt this can be. Wish they included caps for those not immediately buying arms or mounting them somewhere else.

Well so far that's my one day review. I will write more once I have taken the macro port underwater.

All in all the housing will do it's job well. I do wish they would lower their price or at the very least talk to a real diver before adding all of these unnecessary and expensive additions.

Light and Motion Dive Lights

So I just picked up my new video lights. I got two of the 1200 video lights and one 800 photo light. First thing I noticed was how small these lights are. All three are the same size in fit comfortably in the palm of my hand.
Next came the light test and I did this in a sunlit room with the lights on. The 1200's still filled in the shadows and you could clearly see the spot beam on all three power settings. The best part was the light itself. It has a complete coverage. no hotspots and no drop off. These lights are amazing. They came charged, but I plan to drain them down as the instructions say for a complete charge they fill better from empty to full.
The photo light (includes red light) was bought more to see what it would be like. I bought it as a focus light, but decided to get the 800 instead of the 500 for the extra power. This one is a flood light only no spot. Which is all I needed it for. The red light is way better than expected for a couple of reasons. first being it is a lot brighter than I thought it would be. it's not supposed to frighten animals and the selling point that light and motion doesn't mention is that red light doesn't affect your night vision. While that's not really a concern in night diving it does have its uses underwater.
All in all these lights are perfect so far. Still want to see how long the battery actually lasts on full power, but will need a confirmed full battery to accurately test that. Also, another big deal for these is the price and convenience of these. The price is a lot cheaper than the big dive lights for the light you are getting. the convenience of these is the multiple ways they can be mounted to different platforms. I bought additional ball mounts (since they are attaching to strobe arms) and it took about two second to change the attachment pieces. They also have hand straps for another easier option.

My opinion is these are amazing and more than worth the price.

Inon z-240

Well these strobes arrived the day after I ordered them. I ordered from reef photo in fort lauderdale. they were very helpful and have helped when I had questions. Also stephen Frink studios has answered some questions. The strobes arrived and had a lot more bits and instruction booklets than I would have imagined.
If you've ever done any underwater work these are for the most part pretty self explanatory. As I am new to underwater strobes I had some questions about some of the unneeded parts. The instructions never give clear indication about what you should do with certain things if they aren't necessary. If you have a local shop that can help then it's not a big deal, but since a couple of these questionable areas can be potential flood points they are kind of a big deal.
Since my housing seems like it will never arrive I haven't been able to test these strobes underwater or even fire them since they have to hook to a camera. (Maybe, if I can test fire the flash I can't figure out how). The focus light does work and it's pretty nice that you can change the lens filter piece for the red and white options. I do wish however that you could screw both pieces together.
Well so far that's all I've been able to do with them. I talk more about them when I've had a chance to actually test these out.
Still pretty excited...

Aquatica fails so far...

So far this company has let me down. I haven't even gotten the housing yet and already they aren't living up to the quality of their reputation. While it's not a terribly big deal, but they are dragging their feet when it comes to shipping. They told every shop and the dealer i got it from it would take two weeks from purchase date to arrive. Now it will be three weeks before shipping. I've had dealings with the canadian post before and this is not encouraging news.
I really hope this product exceeds all my expectations. Now I have more time to think of ways for this to be used and more ways for them to fail. Maybe I shouldn't put so much hope into top of the line products. I seem to be getting let down quite a lot lately...
